Paintings of Kelaniya temple
The paintings in Kelaniya temple are some of the best paintings that belong to the Colombo period.The older viharage of the Kelaniya temple contains paintings depicting the "jathaka katha"(incidents that related to the Buddha's life).
This paintings had been done with the intention of leading people along the correct path in life.
The section of the viharage also contains with the paintings which done by the well known artists Kahawa,Solius Mendis, over a period of 15 years.
The viharage is the only location where we can see the completed work of this great artist,Solius Mendis.His style was very unique with graceful brush strokes to perspective.
Not only that, the Kelaniya Temple also consisted of popular mural paintings by M.Sarlis.His art of mural paintings includes many historical scenes such as Lord Buddha's visit to Nagadipa,the history of the Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara, the bringing of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi to Lanka,the protection given to the Buddha's Tooth Relic in the knot of hair of Princess Hemamali.
